Verona, Italy, October 8, 2009 —
Allegrini, a leading Italian wine producer from the Valpolicella area in the Veneto region, introduces a new and revolutionary technology that allows a bottle of wine to “talk about itself.”
The technology, called Ecocoder, is a combination hand-held scanner and speaker that is activated by touching the surface of a wine label. The device decodes information embedded in a special layer of ink and instantly plays a pre-recorded audio file stored in its memory card.
“The international wine market is thirsty for information about wine and Italian wines can be difficult for many consumers to understand,” says Marilisa Allegrini, owner of the winery, whose voice can be heard describing the wine on the Ecocoder. ”We hope that this new technology will facilitate their understanding and create a relationship with the person who opens a bottle of our wine.”
The new label technology is being launched through a network of participating retail partners across the United States and coincides with the release of the 2006 vintage of Palazzo della Torre, Allegrini’s most widely-distributed wine. The Ecocoder is being featured in an easy-to-use display that allows shoppers to hear first-hand from the producer about the wine’s history, origin, production, flavors and ideal food pairings.
To accompany this technology, Allegrini has also created a new, more descriptive front label for Palazzo della Torre. The wine is produced using an innovative take on the ancient Roman winemaking technique of drying grapes before crush in order to concentrate flavors and structure. The juice from the dried fruit is then blended with wine made from fresh grapes to initiate a second fermentation, increasing its richness, density and complexity.
This cutting-edge wine communication system, patented by the Italian label designer and printer Modulgraf, was launched exclusively by Allegrini earlier this year at VinItaly, Italy’s largest annual wine trade show.
