As some of you may have read, severe bushfires of an intensity never previously seen even in fire-prone Australia hit parts of Victoria on Saturday 7th February, near the wine capital of Melbourne, including parts of the normally idyllic wine region, the Yarra Valley.
Over 200 people including entire families lost their lives, several in the wine industry. A number of vineyards and wineries were burnt either partially or totally, and although only 5% of the Yarra Valley was ultimately affected directly, the subsequent smoke continues to affect those who escaped the flames.
The Red Cross has set up a Bushfire Relief Fund, which raised many millions of dollars in a week. However rebuilding lives will be costly and take time. The destruction of native wildlife has also been enormous. The Australian wine industry rallied with immediate donations of wine for an enormous Bushfire Relief Fund wine raffle - over A$100,000 of high quality Australian wines and associated goods was donated in 2 days as prizes.
This raffle is open to anyone (of legal drinking age) in the world, although if the winner does live outside Australia, he or she will be responsible for freighting the prize from Australia to their home. Yes, we know that's a bit of a downside, but when you consider that first prize around A$25,000 worth of wine, including some very hard-to-get wines and icons such as Penfolds Grange, it's worth considering. Plus it's for a very good cause.
Of course, you could always come to Australia and have a very large party! To help rebuild and to assist survivors, including 7000 people left homeless, please consider buying a raffle ticket or two - read about the fabulous wines on offer and purchase tickets at VisitVineyards.com:
