Have any individuals tried importing wine from South Africa

I have had many wines from S. Africa, including Chenin Blanc (Steen) and the Bordeaux varieties.
I don't understand what you mean by "how did they do it?

I am a wine columnist and receive samples of wines for review, so I get many S. African wines as samples.
However, they are readily available at most upscale wine shops in the U.S.

There are some wines that are harder to get here in California, so I am pondering the idea of just buying them directly from the winery in South Africa. In most cases you are right.

Also the market up on some of the wines is pretty significant.
