About Me:
Educated as a youth and prep in the Minneapolis/St. Paul suburban school districts, my "true education" began while surviving the 1992 Los Angeles Riots during my tour of colleges in L.A.

My continued pursuit of education led me from San Diego to Long Beach, where I graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a Journalism Degree. After working in the radio and newspaper industry in the L.A. market for a few years I returned home to the Twin Cities a little more than five years ago to take a job at the Star Tribune. To my dismay I was thrown out along with everyone else when the McClatchy Company sold the paper to oil tycoons in 2003.

Since then I managed several Bally Total Fitness proshops/juice bars and now I work in wine sales as I traded in the title "The Bartender of Health" for "Wine with The Enlightening One" which stems from a old newspaper column name of mine.

Although I miss the weather in Southern California, my home for nearly ten years, I am reluctantly accepting the weather conditions of my upbringing once again. Thank God for red wine on a cold-winter evening...

Sparkling wine can close the deal on Valentines Day

Valentines Day again. What to do this year? You purchased the gift. You bought or picked the flowers depending on whether they are buried under snow or if you live somewhere that doesn’t resemble the North Pole. You found the perfectly written card – since putting words on paper or penmanship just aren’t your strength. Now, you need the closer; sparkling…

Merlove movie premier opens mind to Merlot

This documentary, POV narrative by Merlove director Rudolph McClain documents the rise and fall of the Merlot grape through his eyes and numerous industry insiders.

Humorous and made in spite of themes from the movie Sideways where the quality of Merlot is called into doubt by Paul Giamatti who plays Miles - a self-deprecating Merlot hating wine snob - Merlove opens the mind to the value of Merlot.

Shot in a MTV documentary manner with herky-jerky… Continue

The return of Merlot

Merlots have received a bad rap. Who cares if Miles unjustly bagged on Merlot in the 2004 cult-classic film Sideways. That was nearly five years ago! Start with these two high-end Merlots reviewed below and begin falling in love with this grape varietal again.

2005 Northstar Columbia Valley Merlot: This merlot has it all; blackberry, cherry, raspberry and plum. The lasting toasted vanilla finish is pleasant as result of being aged back-to-back in French and American Oak barrels. A… Continue

Enlightening One's red wine worthy Valentine's Day recommendations as pondered by Eric Boyum...

If your money went to flowers, candy, dinner and out of your pockets this Valentine’s weekend fear not; here are a few red wine suggestions to help you balance – and not break - the bank account.

Less than $15 red wines: Broquel Malbec opens our suggestions as a must try “hot” wine that costs under $15. I hate to give credit to anything that comes out of Paris Hilton’s vocabulary, but the Malbecs coming out of Argentina are the new “hot” wine and continue to be a popular… Continue

Enlightening One's white wine worthy Valentine's Day recommendations as pondered by Eric Boyum...

Valentine's Day presents a day for all to fall in love or at the very least, fall in love with a nice bottle of wine. Here are some worthy white wines for less than $15 dollars that you can fall for this Valentine's Day.

Chardonnays: Despite the recent over consumption of this grape and widespread overstocking of this grape varietal in markets (especially true of California-based bottles where it is nearly four-to-one compared to other worthy grapes) Chardonnay remains popular.… Continue

Hi Eric,
AVA - federally sanctioned American Viticultural Areas (AVAs).
Santa Rita Hill became its own AVA, due to Richard Sanford efforts.
He is making beautiful well balanced Pinots.

Hi Eric. It is interesting that you mentioned Dierberg Estate Vineyard. It is a beautiful setting and producing excellent wines. Specially the Pinot from Santa Rita Hills.
Which is your favorite?

I love Hogue, and am a big fan of Washington wines since living there too. Columbia Crest is inexpensive and I feel a good brand.
