Jeff - you definitely picked the right place. You can learn more in that valley thru osmosis than you can by studying anywhere else. I spent 4 years there but regretfully had to leave to raise a family (where I could afford to raise a family). Lots of fantastic palates there. Get to know a few somms and get in with some tasting groups to maximize your opportunities. WARNING - don't take it all too seriously....it's not saving lives, it's just wine. Best of luck to you.
