How to Host a Wine and Pizza Pairing Party at Home

October is National Pizza Month in America, a time to celebrate our unifying devotion to pizza. From one simple dish of yeasted dough with a few toppings, we have developed a cornucopia of regional delicacies: New York’s classic flat crust with sweet tomatoes sauce and melted mozzarella, Chicago’s deep dish full of sausage and gooey cheese, California’s continually creative usage of fresh, seasonal vegetables. Why not throw a pizza and wine tasting party at home, in honor of National Pizza…See More

Wine and Pizza Pairings

Pizza, the tasty delicious yeasted flatbread, is perhaps as ubiquitous worldwide as is wine making. The Italians have their classic pizza Napoletana, the French their salty pissaladière, the Chicagoans their hearty deep dish. And as varied as wine is, so is pizza with its plethora of toppings and crust variations. A good wine and pizza pairing lies mainly in matching the wine’s flavors and textures to the pizza’s toppings.Malbec and PizzaOne could argue that Argentina, while originally…See More

How to Speak With a Sommelier

Having worked as a sommelier in the fine dining world for quite some time, I learned a lot from my customers. I learned common preferences and common qualms, how to recognize if someone is intimidated by the wine list, and how to deal with rather cranky tables. I learned that wine is an integral part of enjoying a meal, and that the happiest customers walk out not only having had great-tasting food and wine, but having had service that made the evening go so much more smoothly. I’d like to…See More

About Me:
I write about wine for a company called Vintners Circle Franchising; VCF runs wine making shops called Vintner's Circle. The shops are places for friends and family to gather and enrich their lives through making, tasting, and enjoying wine.

I have been in the food and beverage industry for more than a decade, and am a certified sommelier. My favorite wine is a good, dry Riesling . . . I hope to one day pick grapes in Alsace, scarring my hands and eating lots of choucroute.

Most memorable experience around wine?
My first meeting as the wine director (and thus wine buyer) for a restaurant involved lots of Duckhorn Merlot and me, terribly underdressed, in ripped jeans and my boyfriend's button-down.

Spanish Stew with Red Wine (aka Marmitako with Rioja)

Marmitako is a Spanish fish and potato stew deeply rooted in Basque cuisine. This dish is simple, hearty, and a fantastic way to travel to northern Spain without leaving your kitchen. Marmitako was originally a fisherman’s stew, as Basque fishers would cook their daily tuna catch on board fishing boats.

A touch of red wine in the recipe is not orthodox, but if you choose an…

Friday Night Wines

Welcome Friday, the quintessential night for tasty take-out like pizza and Chinese food (or Thai, or Mexican, or burgers from that new barbecue joint down the road). I’d like to offer a few wines for pairing recommendations, easily enjoyed with the Friday food classics. Simply swing by your local liquor store on your way to pick up dinner tonight, and you’re all set!
