As you start out the new year, probably with a glass of Champagne or sparkling wine, make a resolution to try some wines in 2010 that you've never tasted. And maybe start with Viognier (pronounced "Vee-uh-nyay"). This is among the world's most arom…

Randy and Smoke: This is a great follow-up. Casual Dining restaurants (e.g. Applebee's) in particular have a huge opportunity here but they're squandering it. Go into any casual restaurant, and you'll be hard-pressed to even find the wine "list" if…

As a former Marine myself I find this laughable, absurd...and totally believable. HOWEVER - I have heard that there's a Gunny who follows the base CG around with a locked briefcase, called the "Fruit-ball" which has the names and SKU codes of all t…

Try Viognier in 2010!

As you start out the new year, probably with a glass of Champagne or sparkling wine, make a resolution to try some wines in 2010 that you've never tasted. And maybe start with Viognier (pronounced "Vee-uh-nyay").

This is among the world's most aromatic whites, with a rich, viscous fullne… Continue

Wines for Thanksgiving 2009

In 10 days it'll be Thanksgiving, and you're probably putting together your menu. And if you're not...get on it! And no matter what you're having, you'll need some wines to go with the big meal.

Vouvray/Chenin Blanc: This is among the best wines in the world for Turkey. Vouvrays are C… Continue

A BOOK JOURNEY ALONG THE WINE TRAIL

One of the ways I've learned about wine, oddly enough, is to read wine books.

Of course you can read lots of technical books - on home winemaking, wine courses such as Jancis Robinson's, or tasting books such as Hugh Johnson's. And for those at the apex of wine geekery like me, there are huge tomes such as Clive Coates' The Wines of Burgundy, or Vino Italiano - The Regional Wines of Italy, that can take weeks to read and are more appropriate for people studying for their MW rather than casual w… Continue

TEN TIPS FOR (GETTING) GOOD RESTAURANT WINE SERVICE

1. Wine should always be served in a clean, spotless glass with no lint. If you get a dirty glass, send it back. Dirty glasses aren't fun to drink from, and soap film gives a nasty taste; it also kills Champagne bubbles.

2. Speaking of glasses, the type and size of glass matters.… Continue

Stepford...WINES?

Most people who drink wine but don't "follow" it haven't heard of Michel Rolland and probably won't be interested in the controversy that occasionally swirls around him. But he's a symbol of how the world of wine is consolidating, and the degree to which some winemakers are influencing wi… Continue

Hi David,
thanks for adding me as your friend. Indeed, Antonini is a superb winemaker that helped improving quality of wines in Arg, specially by making them more attractive for foreign markets.
I hope everything is going well over there!

Salud! (over a glass of Malbec)

Hi David,
Sounds like you are pretty well versed in all of this wine stuff. Is this your full time job?
Also, I see that you did the UC DAvis one week course in July- I did that the first year they offered it- I think maybe in 2001? How was it?
Cheers,
Mary

My company Precision Viticulture International does advanced microclimate analysis for vineyards. We do a diagnosis of a vineyard showing it's risks for sunburn damage, frost damage, and uneven ripening using a technology called hemispherical photography. This lets us determine the actual temperature of your grapes on any given day.

Check out our website at:
www.precisionviticulture.com.

What do you do in the industry?
