When guests come for a tasting at the winery, they are often pleasantly surprised at the flights of wine we offer for tasting. "Wow we get to try a 2004 Pinot Noir, that's great!. We've only been able to taste 2007 wines." I receive many questions from consumers, distributors and restaurants owners who taste our wines, and by far the most common question is: why are you just releasing 2005 wines? The answer to the question comes in a few parts. When John Bacigalupi and Tyler Heck first…

The month is barely started and I am stuck on Christmas Dinner. Seriously the next 17 days can't come fast enough. I want to make a Beef Standing Rib Roast and add green apples to my mashed potatos and drink white wine.
Reisling is an endangered species around me. So is anything remotely nice bottle wine that was destined for the gift exchange is now being planned for a mulled wine experiment.
I also have my eyes set on Cider and Spice bottles and while I am probably lucky…

Born on September 9th, 1924 my grandfather, Charles Bacigalupi grew up on a quiet street in the suburbs of Santa Rosa, California. His mother, Olive Gaddini (Olie) was a homemaker and artist. His father, Albert Bacigalupi ran the local market named after the family; Bacigalupi Market, first established by his father Natale in the early 1900’s.
As a child he attended the local schools all the way up to…

Stumbled upon a great article this afternoon, "Promoting South African Wine in China." Originally sourced from allafrica.com, you can access the article via this link directly.
The article discusses the failure of official promotional strategies of Brand South Africa wines.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No matter from which angle you look at it, however, SA wines are promoted too irregularly in China, if at all, and for the most part China's burgeoning middle class has…
Similar to Sean Connery’s character in the Hunt for Red October where he plays a captain on the hunt for a superior Soviet nuclear submarine, I too am on the hunt for dangerous pest; the light brown apple moth (LBAM). For those not familiar with the LBAM it is an exotic pest native to Australia. These moths pose a serious threat to our environments ecology, beauty and agricultural productivity- not just in California but nationwide. What makes…
There are so many great things about spring time; sunny weather, Bbq’s, days at the beach and planting fresh vegetables to be enjoyed all summer long. With spring the opportunity also comes to plant a new vineyard. Starting a vineyard from scratch takes not only a lot of advanced planning but time, and of course a little financial investment. I went out in the vineyard with my dad and grandfather so he could…
When you are in the wine industry every time of year is a busy time of year. Whether it is pruning or suckering the vines, bottling wine, ordering new labels, helping customers with purchases, shipping orders or dealing with compliance issues there is always something going on at the winery no matter what time of year. The last few weeks I have been traveling all over the country introducing our wines to new markets. My recent trip was to Dallas,…
You know that saying, “April showers bring May flowers, May flowers bring June bugs.” Well I guess Mother Nature has a sense of humor these days and wanted to put her own twist on it. So now I guess it should be May showers bring June flowers… I’m so confused! Normally this time of year growers and vintners alike could slowly start breathing a sigh of relief that they have escaped the worst of the frost. We lucked out this year and have so far only…
The other night Katey and I attended the Wine 2.0 event at Crushpad in SF that was all about “blending wine and technology. We went and poured
John Tyler Pinot Noir and Zinfandel (our new 2005 release!) and to meet and greet other wine industry professionals. It seems like in every business and industry, technology is often the driving forces behind advancement and expansion. This theory can also very easily be…
