My Dearest Beaujolais Nouveau,
I know we have had many happy moments in the past. I know how cute and seductive you have been all these years. Your bright colored labels wrapped around a light and lively body. That adorable and fruity personality that made your Cru Beaujolais sisters so jealous. Oh and lets not forget the great entrance you make every November. You fly all the way from France, stay a couple months, and then your gone.
Well I've been thinking about us and I think we need some space.
First of all..I'm tired of the lies. You tell me that you are made to celebrate the end of the harvest season w hen we both know this is not true. At least not anymore. Sure, maybe 50 years ago, you were an easy drinking table wine for the vineyard workers to celebrate. Soon everyone started to like you. You even made it to the bistros of Paris. Unfortunately, now that you are all grown up you have become this mass produced, engineered, and overly marketed glimmer of your humble past .
You now represent a quarter of all wine sales from Beaujolais and have little to do with celebrating. You have become big business and you have sold your soul to the U.S. and Asian markets.
Oh..and I love how you just pop in around our Thanksgiving holiday and suggest that you are a great pairing for this classic American dinner. Riesling and Pinot Noir have held this spot for many years but you just move in, flirt with everyone and somehow get away with it.
Then there is the sugar added thing. I mean..I never knew your makers often throw in raw sugar to kick up your alcohol levels and sweetness. Are you Kool-aide or wine?
But finally I must leave you because of taste. You just don't impress me anymore. You have become this blathering swill of watered down strawberry, bubblegum and banana peel all pushed together under a cheap synthetic cork. The things that I used to love about you have long since gone.
So the time has come for us to part our ways. Enough of the lies. Enough of the mass produced maket hype! Enough of the candy flavors. I'm moving on.
Sure we can still talk. Perhaps we can meet again while I'm making a Fondue sauce, but I will probably be hanging out with Julienas, or Fleurie. These gals are the real deal! Cheers!
