YES! Its Superbowl time again.
What are you waiting for? grab some hot wings,chips and your favorite side of the couch. . Hmmm? But how about a glass of cold Sauvignon Blanc? Whaatt?? We all know when its football .. its time for beer.
{ But I submit }
Have you ever tasted slow roasted Thia chicken drumettes with a blue cheese and lime cream sauce on the side? Or perhaps some fresh cranberry cilantro salsa with crunchy, blue corn tortilla chips?
These dishes are begging for a crisp New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc ,or a cool glass of dry Riesling. Even a Spicy Zinfandel would do.
I know its a tough argument but most beers can't deliver the nuance needed to compliment delicate flavors. It seems a lot BULK beers are overly lite and tasteless. They tend to be good for washing away whats in your mouth or just cooling off your tongue.
Dont get me wrong I certainly believe that many artisan and craft beers are up to task for food pairings.
{ Check out Grey Sail and Sebago beers for instance }
...but these are not the beers I am refering to. Im refering to the mainstay "gulping" style beers that usually sells in 30 packs.You know the ones. They are as common to football fans as team tattoos,terrible towels, and those guys that take their shirts off during snowy playoff games.
These are the beers with the great commercials and their names painted on the sides of blimps. But lets face it.. they essentially have zero food pairing options except for canned chili and frozen pizza.
SO before you finish building that empty beer can tower.....
Please consider some of these wine pairings for the big game and feel free to use a stemless plastic tumbler.
1) Pulled pork ciabatta with a sweet chipolte BBQ sauce and spicy red cabbage slaw....Plungerhead Lodi old vine Zinfandel.
2) Home cut sweet potato fries with sea salt and truffle oil..
...............Dr Loosen (qba) Riesling.
3) Thia roasted drumette chicken wings with a blue cheese and lime dipping sauce....Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc.
4) Mini sirloin skewers with grilled vegetables and portabellas.
............Ben Marco Malbec.
5) Breaded and fried red Jalapenos halves and a cool sour cream chive filling.....Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc
