Organic wine is made from grapes that have been grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides.
PESTICIDES & FERTILIZERS CAN CAUSE SIGNIFICANT HARM TO HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT
HEALTH IMPACT: Chemical pesticides and fertilizers contain potentially toxic chemicals that cause negative health effects such as cancer, reproductive disorders and influence the immune and endocrine systems as well as neurological health. They also clearly linked to premature births.
ECOLOGICAL IMPACT: Chemical fertilizers can also become air pollutants, and have recently been implicated in the destruction of the ozone layer and in global warming.
A number of "ecological diseases" have been associated with the intensification of the use of chemical fertilizers & pesticides: loss of soil fertility, depletion of nutrient reserves, pollution of water systems, destruction of natural control mechanisms and loss of crop, wild plant, animal genetic resources.
In addition, pesticides can migrate into lakes and streams when it rains. When fertilizers enter a body of water, they can cause oxygen levels to drop, killing aquatic life and posing risks to other species.
In the US, it is estimated that more than 25% of the drinking water wells contain nitrate levels above the 45 parts per million safety standard.
